Ravel Massage Limassol – Rib Pain Causes

Ribs are attached to the spine in the upper back, and most of them are also attached to cartilage in the front, which in turn attaches to the sternum. Ribs can get jammed or slightly misaligned at both joints, causing rib pain when they do. Chiropractors refer to these fixations as subluxations. These subluxations can cause very sharp pain on coughing or sneezing, and also cause constant, dull pain through the back, chest or shoulder region. If you have rib pain, our orthopaedic massage therapist at Ravel massage Limassol can help locate and release the fixated ribs.

Rib Pain – Symptoms

Ms Y* presented at our massage Limassol clinic with a sharp pain in the front of the chest where the first rib attaches to the cartilage, near the sternum. The onset of pain was within a few days without any specific incident setting it off.  She had been seeing her physiotherapist twice a week for 10 weeks, and had been given a number of exercises, but was getting no relief. She decided to try out an osteopath, who manipulated her neck, but unfortunately the pain worsened significantly after this session.

Assessment

After a few tests, and careful palpation, it seemed that the cartilage of Ms Y’s first rib had subluxed at the breastbone. Short and tight muscles in the lateral neck, especially the anterior Scalene, which pulls the first rib up, and the Sub Clavius muscle supported this assessment. Further assessment of Ms Y’s posture revealed a slight right thoracic scoliosis (spinal curve), which tied in with anterior ribs on the left hand side and a shortened anterior Scalene muscle. It was believed that this spinal rotation might have made Ms Y more vulnerable to straining the neck muscle. This could have resulted in the elevated and fixated first rib causing her rib pain.

Rib Pain treatment at Ravel Therapies, Massage Limassol, Cyprus

Sunil uses a range of techniques to release rib fixations at Ravel Therapies Massage Limassol in Cyprus. In this instance, he commenced with cross fibre massage and myofascial massage techniques to release the short muscles pulling on the first rib and the clavicle. These included the muscles attached to the Hyoid bone which is a floating bone in the front of the neck.. He then applied a number of muscle energy contact-relax, joint mobilisation, and rib distraction techniques to release the first rib.

The Result

Ms Y noted significant reduction in pain and increase in range of movement during and after the first remedial massage treatment. This kind of response is common with rib fixations, as the rib often releases immediately, giving complete relief. However, the pain returned within a few days. Sunil advised the client, that there was likely joint irritation and inflammation also, and that it would be a few more treatments before the freedom of movement is restored. The subsequent two musculoskeletal massage treatments progressed the client to experience further pain reduction and increase in range of movement. By the fifth appointment, Ms Y reported complete pain relief and nearly normal range of movement.
