Trapped Nerve Pain – Massage Limassol

There are many locations in the body where nerves often become entrapped. Nerve entrapment irritates the nerve locally, often causing inflammation, but also radiates pain along the nerve down into the toes or fingers. If you think you may have a nerve entrapment, then drop in to see our orthopaedic massage Limassol therapist in Cyprus.

A trapped nerve, strictly speaking, is different from nerve impingement. The latter involves a structure pushing against the nerve, such as a disc bulge in the spinal cord which might push against a nerve root. A trapped nerve, on the other hand, usually refers to a nerve becoming caught up in the fibres of soft tissue surrounding it.

Nerves travel through fascia, which is a thin, membranous, film type of covering. This is the same covering which wraps around all our muscles, ligaments, and organs. Fascia all over the body meshes in and out of other fascia, creating a continuous scaffolding which gives our body its shape. As the fascia of nerves meshes in with the fascia of other soft tissue, it can often get caught in tissue, which has become dry and fibrotic.

Common sites for nerve entrapment include the top of the shoulder blade, the elbow joint, near the sitting bones in the buttocks, on the outside of the knees, on the outside of the ankles and under the toes, among others.

Trapped Nerve Treatment at Ravel Therapies Massage Limassol

Effective treatment of trapped nerves requires a thorough understanding of the location and direction of the nerves, as well as the location and direction of soft tissue fibres around the nerve in which the nerve becomes entrapped. At Ravel Therapies Massage Limassol, our musculoskeletal massage therapist will carefully assess you to identify the location of the trapped nerve.

The actual treatment involves deep cross fibre massage therapy to release the soft tissue fibres which have become fibrotic. The intention is to release the adhesions, and help hydrate the tissue to help normalize its function.

The next step is to perform gentle scooping manouvres to try and scoop the nerve out of its dysfunctional position and into its proper location.

The client may be given simple exercises including stretches to stretch the nerve itself and surrounding tissue to reduce the adhesions in the area of the nerve entrapment.

Usually, nerve entrapments free up well with targeted massage therapy such as that described above. The longer the condition has been present, the longer it will take for the nerve to free up.
